AAYFO Hosts Tulizo Mental Health Meetup

Social media form part of the rapid worldwide digital development that is reshaping the life of many young people. On November 23, 2023, the Africa-Asia Youth Foundation (AAYFO) successfully hosted the first edition of Tulizo Mental Health Meetup Event in Dar es salaam, Tanzania . “Tulizo” is a Swahili word meaning “Comfort”. This crucial youth meetup event was specifically designed to prioritize mental health wellness, raise awareness of the use of social media platforms and providing Comfort to young people facing mental health challenges. The event aimed to nurture positive connections and friendships while focusing on improving mental well-being.

We were honored to have two incredible speakers grace the event with their presence. Mr. Temidayo, a prominent social media content creator and mental health advocate, shared his insights on the impact of social media on young people's lives. During his presentation, he emphasized the importance of being selective about the information we consume and being mindful of the sources we allow to feed us. Mr. Temidayo rightly reminded the audience that not everything found on social media platforms is accurate and urged individuals to make informed choices about the information they absorb. He also shared various platforms that can be used to validate information’s on social media platforms (Fact Checking) including google fact check explorer, Factcheck, InVid, Pesacheck, Africheck, and google image. It is crucial to review information before we distribute to control and reduce the spread of misinformation.   

Mr. Temidayo a social media content creator and Mental health advocate provided insightful discussions and strategies to navigate mental health challanges.


Ms. Sangumarie Butiku, another esteemed speaker, was quoted saying “The use of social media among youth are linked to adverse affects including depression, anxiety, inadequate sleep, low self-esteem, online harassment and poor body image, which can disrupt mental health and lead to depression and suicidal behaviou’s. She also enlightened the audience with her thoughtful discourse on mindfulness and responsible social media use. She underlined the importance of being considerate of the potential consequences of our online actions, both for ourselves and others. As Ms. Butiku rightly stated, being mindful of what we share on social media can have real-life implications. Thus, it is vital to carefully consider the impact our posts might have and contribute to a positive and respectful online environment.

Tulizo Mental Health Meetup event served as an invaluable platform for young individuals to openly discuss their daily experiences, particularly regarding the influence of social media on our lives. The event provided strategies for navigating mental health challenges and promoted open dialogue surrounding this crucial topic. By creating a safe space for young people to share their stories, the meetup event aimed to break the stigma surrounding mental health and empower individuals with the knowledge and resources to seek help and support when needed.

During the Sessions participants were able to share their experiences, perspectives and insights.


We are thrilled to announce that Tulizo Mental Health Meetup event will become a regular event, taking place every Thursday at the end of the month at the UN library in the PSSSF Tower. We anticipate that future editions will continue to foster meaningful conversations, create supportive networks, and empower young people in their journey towards improved mental well-being.
