AAYFO Commemorates International Youth Day.

On 10th August 2023, the Africa-Asia Youth Foundation (AAYFO) in collaboration with the African Youth Transformation Team (AYT) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) came together to commemorate International Youth Day (IYD). The event was attended by over 150 youths from civil associations, schools, and universities, providing a platform for them to engage in a panel discussion and public dialogue. The central focus of the event was "Green Skills for Youth: Addressing Global Unemployment Challenges - Pathways and Best Practices."

This commemoration aimed to inspire and provide solutions for the global unemployment crisis through the promotion of sustainable green skills. The event was honored by the presence of Dr. Soumya Chavan, the Director & Second Secretary of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, High Commission of India.
The objectives of this commemoration were as follows:
1. To raise awareness of green skills and their relevance in addressing the challenges of unemployment, emphasizing the central role of young people in the transition towards a greener future.
2. To equip stakeholders with the knowledge and information necessary to understand the importance of green skills for young people.
3. To showcase policies and practices that can nurture the development of green skills among young people.
4. To provide an inclusive platform for stakeholders to exchange views and ideas on these topics.

Mr. Joseph Malekela AAYFO Chief Operations Officer (COO)

The opening session of the event featured an address by Mr. Joseph Malekela, who provided an overview of AAYFO's work in Tanzania and its advocacy for youth development and cross-continental cooperation for sustainable development. He expressed his gratitude for the commitment shown by the attendees in participating in this event.

Dr. Soumya Chavan, esteemed guest speaker graced the Africa-Asia Youth Foundation as the Guest of Honor. Her presence brought a wave of inspiration and enthusiasm among the attendees, as she shared her remarkable journey and emphasized the significance of starting early in one's career and seizing opportunities.

Dr. Chavan began her address with heartfelt gratitude for being invited as the guest of honor. She expressed her happiness at being given the platform to connect with young individuals who hold the potential to bring about impactful changes. She acknowledged the importance of youth empowerment, stressing that they are the future leaders who can shape a better world. Dr. Chavan shared her own personal experience. She revealed that she had embarked on her first job at the tender age of sixteen. This experience, she emphasized, played a pivotal role in shaping her values, career trajectory, and ultimately molding her into the person she is today.

Encouraging the young audience, Dr. Chavan underscored the importance of having the courage to start early and not being afraid of seizing opportunities, even if they may seem small at first. She highlighted that it is through these initial steps that one gains invaluable experience, builds networks, and hones crucial skills that pave the way for future success.
Drawing from her vast knowledge and expertise, Dr. Chavan spoke passionately about the diverse opportunities available in India. She emphasized that the country is ripe with possibilities for young individuals to grow and thrive. From entrepreneurship to social development initiatives, scientific research to technological innovations, India presents a myriad of avenues for youth to explore and make a difference.

The panelists, Mr. Humphrey, Chairman of Youth Survival organization and a Youth for Climate Advisory Committee Member; Ms. Noelle, Director of Great Hope Foundation; Ms. Sarah, Founder of the Human Dignity and Environmental Care Foundation (HUDEFO); and Mr. Augustine Deogratius Programme officer of international institution for tropical agriculture (IITA).

The panel discussion consisted of panelists from various African and Asian countries, who offered valuable insights on best practices to address the challenges faced by youth, especially in relation to unemployment.The panelists shared their experiences and expertise, presenting effective strategies and initiatives to tackle the issue of youth unemployment. Their insights served as a source of inspiration and guidance for the attendees, fostering a collaborative and solution-oriented atmosphere.

Throughout the commemoration, the forum provided an opportunity to showcase the talents of the youth. Students from Benjamin High School demonstrated their skills, reflecting the energetic and dynamic nature of the youth. AAYFO, as an organization, firmly supports the development of youth talents and skills in addressing social challenges.

Mr. Justin Godson, the Executive Director of African Youth Transformation (AYT), delivered a vote of thanks, encouraging youth to attend more events, build networks, and embrace opportunities to build sustainable partnerships.

In conclusion, the commemoration of International Youth Day by AAYFO in collaboration with AYT and IITA  was a resounding success. It provided a platform for young people to engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and showcase their talents. By emphasizing the importance of green skills in addressing unemployment challenges, this event played a crucial role in inspiring and equipping the youth to contribute to sustainable development both globally and within their communities.
